The Last Desert

Since Matt did such a great job with his write-up of our latest running adventure, I didn't see much of a reason to blog about it here -- except to add that I never knew that running in the dark in 13-degree weather could be so much fun!

On the run last Sunday morning, Matt mentioned the idea of putting together a "dream list" of races you'd love to run if money were no object and time were unlimited. This is something I really need to do, but will take some time.

In the meantime, since The Last Desert race will begin four days from now, my attention has been focused south. This, the final leg of a four-race series called the Four Deserts Race, is actually pretty "cushy" as polar adventures go: each night the competitors in this 150-mile race get to return to "camp" on an Antarctic research vessel, where the crew has prepared hot meals for all.

Given the extreme aridity of the air, and the unpredictable weather, I know this race is no cakewalk -- but it sounds like a fun way to see a lot of the "Last Continent." Each morning, the race participants wake up in a different part of Antarctica to traverse a new challenge in another environment. I'd say the Last Desert race will probably have a place on my "dream list" of races.
